What is T’AI CHI?

T’ai Chi is a gentle form of exercise for health and relaxation which originates from ancient China.

For the last 3,000 years the Lee family has been responsible for handing down these arts, the form that we use is called Lee style.

It consists of gentle flowing circular movements that are combined with deep breathing exercises in order to cultivate the inner energy of the body or ‘chi’.

T’ai Chi exercises can be practised anywhere, clean air, space and a little time each day is all that is needed. With dedicated practice and an open minded attitude it is possible for anyone to feel the flow of their internal energy and thereby take the first steps along the road towards a lifestyle which integrates the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of their being.

The class starts with  gentle warming up exercises, followed by breathing exercises K’ai Men and Ch’i Gung to stimulate your energy, then onto a T’ai Chi dance based upon slow natural movements.  There are various interactive exercises such as Sticky Hands.  T’ai chi Form is another set of movements which helps generate more energy or Chi and then there is a final exercise to close down and contain all the energy you have generated.

In T’ai Chi there are 14 stances. These were laid down by the Lee family in ancient China and were named after various animals and birds.

Classes are of mixed ability’s and beginners are always welcome.
